What to check
MCS certification
MCS certifies installers and products for small-scale renewables. An MCS installation is normally needed to get paid for exported electricity through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
RECC or HIES membership
These consumer codes set standards for how installers sell, contract and deal with complaints, including deposit protection.
TrustMark
TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home.
Warranties
Ask what is covered: panels, inverter, battery and the workmanship itself, and for how long.
Insurance
Check the installer holds public liability insurance and whether warranties are insurance-backed.
A written quote
A good quote lists the equipment, estimated generation, costs, timescales and what happens if something goes wrong.
