Solar panels: common questions
Do solar panels work in winter?
Yes, but they generate much less in winter because days are short and the sun is low. Most generation happens between spring and autumn.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Scotland?
Many domestic roof installations are permitted development, but there are exceptions, including listed buildings, conservation areas and some ground-mounted systems. Your installer or local council can confirm.
How long does installation take?
A typical domestic roof installation takes one to three days once scaffolding is up. Larger or more complex systems take longer.
Can I get paid for the electricity I export?
With an MCS-certified installation you can usually apply for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff from an energy supplier. Rates vary between suppliers.
